Setapp is worth it if you use several paid Mac apps from its catalog regularly and prefer one subscription to separate purchases. If you only rely on one or two apps, it often is not. Setapp offers a 7-day free trial on its individual plans, so you can check your own list of apps before you pay anything.
The details below come from Setapp's pricing page and education discount page, read on 2026-10-24. Prices are before tax and can change, so confirm them on Setapp's site.
What are Setapp's plans and prices?
Setapp is a subscription service run by MacPaw. Its homepage describes a catalog of more than 300 apps. The individual plans differ mainly by how many devices they cover:
| Plan | Monthly price (before tax) | Devices | Trial |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mac | $14.99 | 1 Mac | 7 days |
| Mac + iOS | $18.99 | 1 Mac and 4 iOS devices | 7 days |
| Power User | $22.99 | 4 Macs and 4 iOS devices | 7 days |
The pricing page also says you can save up to 40% with yearly billing. Different sources quote different yearly figures, so open the page and use its yearly toggle for the number that applies to you today. The Mac and Mac + iOS plans each include 1,000 AI credits, and Power User includes 2,000, according to the same page.
Setapp also has team and business plans, which have their own pricing page and are not covered here.
Does Setapp have a student discount?
Yes, but the rule is narrower than many older articles say. Setapp's education page states a 20% discount, applied only to the annual Mac + iOS plan. The page shows that plan going from $134.88 to $107.88 per year, plus tax. You qualify with a .edu address or an email from one of the listed educational domains, and the discount is applied automatically at checkout, with no coupon.
Some blog posts and coupon sites still say students get 50% off. That figure is out of date, and we could not find it on Setapp's current education page. If a site asks you to pay for a "student coupon", skip it. The official discount needs no code.
Two limits to remember:
- Monthly billing is not part of the discount, according to the education page.
- If your school's domain is not on the list, the page says to contact Setapp so they can switch your plan.
What happened to Setapp Mobile?
Setapp Mobile was a separate app store for iPhone in the European Union. It closed on 2026-02-16, according to MacRumors and AppleInsider. The Mac side of Setapp is not affected. Setapp's pricing page still lists a Mac + iOS plan with four iOS devices, but it does not explain what the iOS part includes now, so read the plan description on the site before you choose it.
What kind of person gets value from Setapp?
Setapp is a good fit for:
- People who use many apps a little. If you reach for a disk cleaner, a PDF tool, a writing app, a window manager and a few others over a year, one subscription may cost less than buying each.
- People who like to try things. Swapping between similar apps costs nothing extra, which helps when you are still deciding what you like.
- Freelancers and students who want one bill. The student discount helps if you take the annual Mac + iOS plan.
It is a weaker fit for:
- People who need one or two specific apps. A single one-time purchase may be cheaper over two or three years.
- People who want to own their tools. With a subscription you do not keep the apps if you stop paying, and an app can leave the catalog.
- People who use only free software. There is nothing to gain.
A simple test: list the apps you would actually pay for, price them on their own websites, and compare the total with one year of Setapp. If Setapp is clearly lower, it is worth it. If it is close, the convenience of one login and one bill decides it.
Which should you choose?
| Your situation | What to do |
|---|---|
| You are unsure it fits your workflow | Start the 7-day trial |
| You are a student who wants Setapp for a year | Use the annual Mac + iOS plan with an education email |
| You want to try it for a few months without a yearly commitment | A prepaid membership code can work, see below |
| You use only one or two paid apps | Compare buying them directly first |
| You need several Macs | Check the Power User plan and the number of devices |
